Local Mobile Marketing Tactics- Geo-Fencing 101
With today’s location based technologies, marketers can really hone in precisely on their target market. Online marketers can engage with an audience in real time today knowing exactly where that audience is and measure their behavior. Due to the fact that such a large percentage of our population has a mobile phone with GPS built in, customers can now receive promotions in some very responsive ways. Let’s take a quick look at one of the more common Geo-targeting methods today, Geo-Fencing.
Geo-fencing = Is when a preset area or zone is set up so that when a customer with a mobile device enters this zone, their device receives a notification which is typically a text promotion.
As retailers and marketers are fighting to attract and keep customers, geo-fencing has become a strong weapon in the mobile marketing arena. It is a very attractive as well as engaging tactic since it works in real time and the response rates have been relatively decent. With the technology, messages and special offers are sent to the customer as a way to encourage them to walk into a business and purchase an item. It also allows a business to send content to customers based on data, such as location, type of device, past usage, and even language. It is personalized advertising at its best.
If you have a new shop on the corner or an old shop and business is a little slow, I would highly recommend that you do a little research into this marketing tactic. As we all know, it is a real struggle to attain new customers or even old customers time today, as they are bombarded with so many messages coming from all different directions and devices. One of the attractive aspects of geo-targeting promotions is that it is opt-in and it typically uses SMS or text messaging which has a very high response rate. So if you are debating what to do with your budget in the coming Back to School timeframe, I would highly suggest that you take a look at this option and compare it to your other efforts.
